Of all the import trucks that raced the Baja 1000, guess who won the whole enchilada.
The Baja.
A strip of land below the Califomia-Mexico border. Its terrain is made up of jagged rocks, sand washes, a dry lake bed, tide pools, mud, silt beds, you name it. If you’re a snake or a lizard, it’s paradise. If you’re an automobile or truck, it’s hell.
Yet it was on this God-forsaken strip of land that an Isuzu 4x4 pick-up finished first among imported trucks during a recent Baja 1000. It was the only diesel entry in the entire race.
The achievement becomes even more heroic when one considers these facts.
The Baja 1000 is usually entered at substantial cost with crews, drivers and multiple truck entries. The Isuzu 4x4 was a single entry, with only its driver and owner, Henry Simpson, his co-driver, John Comacho, and a very small crew.
Not only that, all the other entries benefitted from highly modified racing engines and transmissions. The Isuzu used only a stock diesel engine and transmission.
All of which goes to prove what a land of opportunity America truly is. Because after 60 years of proving how tough we are all over the world, we proved it here in only 28 hours.
