    Description

    COLLECTED WORKS OF GUSTAV STICKLEY
edited by Stephen Gray and Robert Edwards, Turn of the Century Editions, NY, 1981/1989.
Here is a selection of Stickley’s writings and items from Craftsman’s catalogues.  The editors have sought to create a book from primary materials which will aid contemporary collectors, curators, and other interested persons in defining and understanding the American Arts and Crafts Movement as it was envisioned by the works and artisans who led it.  Chapter topics include selections from “Things Wrought” by United Crafts, 1902, a 1906 discussion of Gustav Stickley’s development and the influences on it, illustrations from the first three volumes of
    The Craftsman
magazine, influence of William Morris, Harvey Ellis’ inlaid furniture, cabinet designs, the origin of Stickley’s famous maker’s mark, wood finishes, Craftsman chimney pieces, and exerts from trade magazines of Craftsman Workshop, dating 1904, 1906, 1914 and 1917.  These primary sources, thoroughly illustrated in black and white, can lead to a deeper understanding of this important American style through the eyes of those who lived with it and created it.
