Description
This is a Regina Brock Handmade Artist Bear. He was made October 15, 1984 by Regina. He has never been on display or out of his box except for the photo and to initially look at him when I bought him from a fellow bear collector. Never exposed to smoke, perfume or scent of any sort. Each Regina Brock bear from that time period was totally made by Regina. She used a process of weaving raw roving mohair onto linen. It is a very time consuming and difficult process. She made bears as art pieces, not just as a toy. At the time she made these bears raw mohair was difficult to find and no one else used her method.
As the mohair was raw and colorless when she found it, she would mix fabric dyes to create the color bear she wanted. Once she obtained the color she wanted, she took the mohair and mixed it in large pots on a stove and let it "cook" over the heat. Then it was drip dried. It would take months for her to complete a bear, sewing in small strands of mohair, one strand at a time.
To really understand the complexity of Regina Brock's bears, I want to share what her daughter told me. Each bear
"is actually a literal skeletal structure of bolts and wires underneath the fur to make them fully movable, then she would wind a layer of special string around the wire and bolts. Then she literally sewed a small tuft of mohair nearly one strand at a time into the bear." (Thank you Hailey for writing to me with such interesting information on your mom's bears.)
The bears were made on a commission basis only. This is bear No. 5 from 1984. He is not part of an edition, the number means he was the 5th bear she made in 1984. He has glass eyes, hand-sewn nose and "claws." Soft sculpture form according to the information on the box.
NO other bears can measure up to a Regina Brock bear and as a collector, it is hard to let this little one go, but I think another serious collector should have it now.
