Birmingham Mass Shooting: Disturbing Details Emerge as Manhunt Intensifies

The mayor of Birmingham is seeking the public’s help to “hunt down, capture, arrest and convict” the suspects in Saturday’s mass shooting that left four people dead as the manhunt intensifies.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and other officials asked the public for information about the suspects during a press conference on Monday.
“This mass shooting has a heavy toll of the community as a whole, but nothing more harmful than the emotional and physical pain of these actual victims,” Woodfin said. “But I want to make myself very clear on what the priority is: It is to hunt down, capture, arrest and convict the people who are responsible for this mass shooting.”
The FBI and Crime Stoppers are offering $50,000 each for information leading to arrests.
Four people were killed and 17 were injured in a shooting in the Five Points South neighborhood of Birmingham at around 11 p.m.
Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27, all died at the scene, according to officials. A fourth male victim that died at the University of Alabama Hospital has not been identified yet.
Woodfin also called out individuals who are criticizing law enforcement’s handling of the ongoing investigation.
“Everyone who wants to play detective on social media, everyone in the streets that’s pointing a finger at the police and everyone else, this is your time to step up, and there is an ample award for you doing your part as a community member,” Woodfin said.
Officials said that “multiple suspects” opened fire at a large group of people, and over 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said that 12 of the injured victims have been released from the hospital.
Thurmond previously said the gunmen in Saturday’s mass shooting were executing a “hit.” He elaborated on how law enforcement came to that conclusion.
“Some of the individuals that were killed had extensive criminal histories,” Thurmond said. “Because of that, there’s oftentimes motivation from others and there’s people who are willing to pay to have them killed.”
The area where the shooting happened is popular due to its proximity to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The shooting happened outside of Hush, a lounge in the entertainment district.
No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified yet.

Following the attack, Woodfin condemned the prevalence of gun violence in the nation and the city of Birmingham.
“We find ourselves in 2024, where gun violence is at an epidemic level, an epidemic crisis in our country. And the city of Birmingham, unfortunately, finds itself at the tip of that spear,” he said.
There have been 23 mass shootings in the U.S. this year so far. Three of those shootings were in Birmingham.
Four men were killed in a drive-by shooting in Birmingham in February of this year. A group was standing outside a home as people got their cars washed when the gunman drove by and opened fire. Investigators said one of the victims was being targeted.
Two women and two men were killed in a shooting at a nightclub in Birmingham in July. One of the men was found dead on the sidewalk and two women were found dead inside the nightclub. Another died later at the hospital.
